This is the research diary of researcher Lisbeth Klastrup, since february 2001 sharing her thoughts on life, universe, persistent online worlds, games, interactive stories and internet oddities with you on the www.

I am currently on leave from the IT University of Copenhagen, and from aug. 2006 - aug. 2007 working as Associate Research Professor at the Center for Design Research Copenhagen, an independant center situated at the School of Architecture. During this year, I will be working on a book about the development of aesthetics, design and interaction on the WWW, together with colleague Ida Engholm.

My blog often reflects how busy I am in general, so posting may be pretty irregular, as well as my potential response to comments. But I read them!

Danish Government terminates group exams

The Danish Government has decided to terminate group exams at the Danish Universities. From 2007, all students have to be tested individually at an exam and cannot present a joint project as a group for the exam. This has - justified, I think - enraged quite a few students and academic staff, especially at those universities in Denmark (Roskilde and Ålborg) where group work is the core of the studies - and a pledge to keep the group exams have been started. It was about time to quit the absurdity of group exams. I greet the decision of the Danish government.

As a by now seasoned supervisor and examiner, I believe there is much good in letting a group who have worked as a team on a project, also present this project as a team, as they can support each other and explain nuances in the work and of the project, that one student who might have just worked on part of it, might not be able to do if he or she were to present the work at an individual exam. As long as we still give people individual grades for their performances, I see no need to terminate group exams as such.

Group exams can be faked too easy and have been in the past no matter what naive students tell the media. yes, in a perfect world a group should defend a group work.
However, you will never (not in even the most utopia companies) ignore that individuals have areas of responsibilites that they are accountable for. The means
