Officially now a year and a few days older, and getting tired of the silent restlessness of my apartment. But doing workrelated stuff for a few hours still wears me down - even socialising drains me for energy after a while. I wonder how I would end up if I was deemed to live a solitary life like this always. Talking to myself? Drawing on the walls? Living in the past?

An eventful day
Today, my good friend and soon former ITU student Tommy defended his Master's Thesis with flying colours. He's done some very interesting work (in English!) on non-verbal forms of social interaction in EverQuest. Tommy is now officially a cand.it (the official degree name for candidates from the IT University). Congratulations! At ITU, I met Gonzala Frasca and his sweet wife Virginie. They arrived in Denmark yesterday - unfortunately they had the worst reception possible. These day, I'm really ashamed to live in Denmark when it comes to immigration politics. I hope, I helped them sort out where to go next to hand in the right applications for residence permits. Of course, all the relevant information on immigration matters and residence permits is on the www for people to find - in Danish! Helloooo..... Actually, I wasn't supposed to be at work, but I was heading an exam and it was the last day for handing in and dealing with receipts from last year (and I had quite a few of those for my house account). You see, I finally went to the doctor the other day, and she diagnosed me with inflammation of the ear and throat, frontal sinusitis and bronchitis, wrote out a strong penicillin cure and told me to try and stay at home and get better. It comes pretty natural, since I'm dead tired and coughing and blowing my nose all the time. And it is in weird way "nice" to know, that there is a reason why I haven't been really well since before christmas and that it is not just a question of me not being able to pull myself together etc. But my, am I getting tired of watching afternoon soaps... - So why did I go to work? I guess, it's just that when there are other people involved (like students) who you will clearly be letting down, by for instance not examining them or posing their exam questions, it's really difficult to cancel work activities - when you can actually stand up, move around and make decent conversation for a while. Luckily no more exams before monday (and then only one). Till then, I'll try to sleep and relax. And have people do stuff for me. 19.1.04
What you can also use the web for...??!?
Inspired by ongoing Danish tv series "Kroeniken" (starring a television builder), the Archives of the Danish State has launched a so-called "webexibit" on Danish Televisions from the 1950's . Sic. Sadly for a "webexibit" almost non-interactive, and the writers need to work a little on their webcommunication skills. But an alternative way to advertise an otherwise rather unknown stately business. 18.1.04
How are you intelligent?
You can test this in a Danish version of an IQ test based on Howard Gardner's ideas Test: Hvordan er du intelligent? 16.1.04
Jesper Juul, Ph.D.!
Just an hour ago (Danish time), Jesper was told by his evaluation commitee that he is now a ph.d.! According to the Danish Ph.D. defense rules, this happened (very) shortly after a long and succesful defense, with opponents Peter Bøgh Andersen, Marie-Laure Ryan and Brian Sutton-Smith as other actors on the stage. Especially the relationsship between rules and the real world and rules and the fictional world was discussed and approached from a variety of angles throughout the event. It is not always that you come away from an event like this with lots of notes and good ideas, brought up by both defendant and the opponents, but this was clearly the case of this defense. Congratulations, Jesper! 15.1.04
6 minutes of fame..?!
I was interviewed by Danish National Radio last week, and yesterday it was broadcast as part of the P1 programme Apropos and their special feature on IT. I talk a bit about the gamecenter and my research in online worlds, especially with focus on social aspects, as that was what the journalist was most interested in. The programme is online as streaming media here. You can find my interview between minutes 8.20 and 14.20... (it's easy to fastforward with the slider in RealPlayer etc). 12.1.04
Lifesign
Been ill for a week now with horrible cold, but nevertheless had to work for the last 3 days anyway, as final version of the anthology ("Digital Aesthetics & Design") is due at the publisher tomorrow. Believe me, correcting my own spelling mistakes and long trailing academic sentences with a head pounding from maxillary sinusitis [at least I learned a new English word today] is not my idea of a good time. But the anthology will be really, really good, once it finally hits the booksellers' desks. Jill will be visiting wednesdag as will Scott Rhettberg (looking forward to meeting him!). And thursday, lectures by Brian Sutton-Smith and Marie-Laure Ryan and then, friday, Jesper's defense. So there is a great week ahead :). Please let me be well! 7.1.04
New Year via SMS.
I do it, my friends do it and even my technofobe sisters have started doing it. Wishing each other happy new year via sms (short text messages). According to numbers from Danish TDC, Danes sent more than 18.000 sms per minute the first night of the new year. And 13 million sms's all together on January 1st and 2nd. Talk about penetration of technology. Sms is here to stay... 5.1.04
Here is the weblog/livejournal of Aaron Delwiche who is also a virtual worlds researcher. He has had an entire class do research in EQ, would really like to find out more about that project.

Nietzsche on Play....
There are two things a real man likes -- danger and play; and he likes woman because she is the most dangerous of play things. Hmmh. 2.1.04
New year ahead....
I went into it quietly, in compagny of two dear friends and their friend, far away from Copenhagen, in a starlit night. Going to the venue of the event, in a modern Danish classic I just started to read, I came across the lines below. They somehow capture well, how I feel about being an academic at the moment. I hope confusion will lessen as the year progresses: Alt er, som det burde være, men endeløsheden, de historier på bunden af historien: For øjnene af mig opløses al forståelse, overblikket brister i et labyrintisk mylder. [Hans Jørgen Nielsen: Fodboldenglen, 1979] (UK trans, my own: "Everything is as it ought to be, but the endlessness, those stories at the bottom of history: In front of my eyes, all understanding dissolves, the general overview bursts into a labyrinthic svarm") |
