Lo & behold: a new issue of Gamestudies is out with lots of new and enlightning academic articles on games. I know the active editors, the copyreader and the tech assistant worked hard to get it on the street for your christmas holiday pleasure, so thanks to them :)!

I was briefly quoted in an article about user-generated news in Berlingske Tidende yesterday (and helped supply the quote from Reuter's in the beginning): Som Sørensen oplevede det.

My next "media appearance" and the first in 2007 (I guess) will be in documentary on life in cyberspace anno 2006, that's going to be aired on BBC on January 10th. This wednesday I was filmed by a Danish crew while being interviewed on mobile by the BBC journalist. Interesting experience, especially since I was talking about our "virtual" existence online (and the death stories project), all the time facing a tech director that pretended to be the journalist. Weird but funny!

Det er svært ikke at tænke i uanstændige baner, når en svensk kollega foreslår at "kanske vi kan bolla utkast med varandra!". I praksis drejer sig såmænd bare om udveksling af artikler...men der åbner sig helt nye muligheder for "crossfertilisation" ;)!

This has nothing to do with academia or research, but the choir I sing in, are in dire need of more male singers, and therefore I've decided to use this space to share a small add:

Lille, ambitiøst og socialt kammerkor søger herrer (tenorer og basser) der vil synge med os fra og med den kommende forårssæson. Vi synger klassisk musik, a capella og med akkompagnement, og øver en gang om ugen. For at blive optaget, skal du kunne synge rent, kunne indlære ny musik hurtigt og have lyst til at deltage i en uformel optagelsesprøve.

I think it must be the first time in history that two game Ph.D's comes out of the same institution within two days, nevertheless this is what happens at the IT University exactly these days. Jonas Heide Smith and Miguel Sicart, who for a long time have been sharing an office and the pains of writing a Ph.D, have reached the end of their journey - on time! Jonas defended his Ph.D. thesis on Plans and Purposes - How Videogame Goals Shape Player Behaviour yesterday and is now Dr. Smith - congratulations! In a few hours, it is Miguel's turn to take the stand and defend his thesis on Computer Games, Players, Ethics - I'm sure also he will do a brilliant job and look forward to take part in the event. Well done both!

The PerGames 2007 symposium on all forms of pervasive game technologies and design looks potentially interesting. The deadline for research papers is March 1st, 2007, and the conference will be held in Salzburg, Austria, in June 2007.

Berlingske Tidende, one of the larger Danish newspapers, is currently running a blog called I hittebarnets spor ("On the Trails of the Foundling"). The concept behind the blog is that two journalists have a week to try to disclose the identity of the unknown mother who about a month ago left a newborn baby in the driveway of a house in Northern Sealand, in an area mostly populated with summer residences. The blog describes their search.

The blog so far consists of several daily postings, describing the journalists' "detective" work: they look for clues, talk with the police and the locals, track down places where the pregnant woman could have hidden out etc AND look for an internet connection.

To me this appears to be a new "genre" attempt within the uses of the blog by journalists (though some journalist is likely to have done something similar in a US context already). You've got a focused theme, a clearcut story, a puzzle to solve and a timeframe. Will they succeed where the police seemed to have failed (as the set-up goes)? Here's a narrative that should be able to hook readers...to me a proof, that in a more professional context, blogs are, in the long term, more likely to succeed as short term endeavours.

Even if I dont say anything in this space, it doesn't necessarily mean that I'm silent.. I've discovered, through my webstat software, that quite a few people come to the klastrup.dk site to look at the Walgblog (election blog) or the Forskerblog list (Danish researchers blogging list), so I've decided to regularly spend some time updating them as well. So they are now both pretty much up to date and I've changed the template of the Forskerblog, so it isn't so all-over-green anymore. - They are both in Danish, btw, and linked from the menu on the right.
