This is the research diary of researcher Lisbeth Klastrup, since february 2001 sharing her thoughts on life, universe, persistent online worlds, games, interactive stories and internet oddities with you on the www.

I am currently on leave from the IT University of Copenhagen, and from aug. 2006 - aug. 2007 working as Associate Research Professor at the Center for Design Research Copenhagen, an independant center situated at the School of Architecture. During this year, I will be working on a book about the development of aesthetics, design and interaction on the WWW, together with colleague Ida Engholm.

My blog often reflects how busy I am in general, so posting may be pretty irregular, as well as my potential response to comments. But I read them!

Yet another blog by me: Danske Forskerblogs [Danish Research Blogs]
So far, it looks like my publications this year will be mostly in Danish. This week a special issue on current culture trends by the Danish Culture Zine Kulturo came out, including a small essay by me on netnarratives. And in the beginning of March, an article about my experiences with the use of the blog as researcher will be published in the Danish online journal UNEV.

For the UNEV article, I have just set up (yet) another blog, called Danske Forskerblogs (Danish Research Blogs]. I've tried to track and "historize" the Danish Research Blogs, I know of and have been able to find. However, I have only been able to find 11, which isn't a lot - there must be more out there. So go take a look, and post a comment if you know of more!

PS. As research blogs, I count all blogs written by ph.d.students, research assistents and junior and senior researchers. There are a lot of great Danish blogs out there written by BA and Master's Students, but they deserve their own category!

DAC 2005 CFP out + website up and running
I finally got the website for DAC 2005 up and running, and started circulating the CFP.
It's going to be a great conference - and I hope that the general theme will also be able to attract perhaps a new audience and field of contributors.

Feel free to link ad libitum!

"Nanoaudiences"?!
The summary of the Perseus Blog Survey presents an interesting new word/phrase, I haven't come across before: nanoaudiences. The word is used to describe the fact (according to Perseus) that most blogs only have few and select readers, far less than a masscommunication medium.

Article on Story creation in virtual game worlds
In the january 2005 issue of Communications of the ACM, special section on interaction design and children, there is a Story creation in virtual game worlds, written by Judy Robertson and Judith Good. Can't access from home, so have to check out at work, but Im quite sure that I heard Judy Robertson present a project where she had done some really interesting things with children, stories and the Unreal game engine back in 2000 at the Narrative in Interactive Learning Environments conference, NILE 2000.

Gameblogs united
Probably Gameblogs.org has been doing the rounds on a lot of gameblogs already. But I haven't come across it before. Lists "all" gameblogs by categories and alphabetically etc, so a good ressource.

Apparently Klastrup's Cataclysms isn't a gameblog as the blog is not listed there - but I guess it really never was. I mention games sometimes, but not all the times. And I guess the logical definition of a gameblog is that it is a blog that only or primarily discusses (computer) games?!!

Milestones in online journalism
Interesting article, also pointing to weblogs: Milestones in online journalism (from December 2004). Found on the website journalism.co.uk, which generally looks interesting.

You feel really stupid when...
...you get your act together and cook for yourself for once. And then end up giving yourself food poisoning. Not to be recommended!

Fellow head, fellow frustrations?
Jill has started blogging about her new life as head of her department. It's nice to have a female colleague in a near-by country facing some of the challenges that I have had. Sadly, I have come to realise, that even if the life as head of department is filled (sometimes) with drama and conflicts, you cant really blog about it, because of issues of confidentiality, strategics and personal considerations.

Oh, and I worked 11 hours monday and 9 yesterday. I've kinda given up keeping track, I'm just very happy when I get to do some research at all. In fact, starting the walgblog (Danish election campaign blogs) project has boosted my workday from the average 9-10 hours to some 10-12 hours, the days I do something about the blog research. But currently I see it as the price I have to pay if I want to do my job well. Trying to make sure that things run smoothly and that the now 18 people in my department are not too overloaded with work or worries requires this (though I'm not always sure that they sense that this is what Im trying to do...). And it's OK (also when people dont get what your work is about) because I voluntarily chose to go into this. Most days.

And it's OK because I haven't got my own family. Seeing the demands that being a head (not just at the ITU, but the job per se) sometimes puts on your mental and physically well-being (at least mine), I'd never gone into this if I had my own family and small children to take care of and be with as well. Now more than ever, I fully understand why many women give up pursuing a career as head/manager/leader.
