This is the research diary of researcher Lisbeth Klastrup, since february 2001 sharing her thoughts on life, universe, persistent online worlds, games, interactive stories and internet oddities with you on the www.

I am currently on leave from the IT University of Copenhagen, and from aug. 2006 - aug. 2007 working as Associate Research Professor at the Center for Design Research Copenhagen, an independant center situated at the School of Architecture. During this year, I will be working on a book about the development of aesthetics, design and interaction on the WWW, together with colleague Ida Engholm.

My blog often reflects how busy I am in general, so posting may be pretty irregular, as well as my potential response to comments. But I read them!

Seminar frenzy
Two days of management seminar, and then two days of managing the DIAC seminar and then it's weekend and time to, in principle, write an abstract for two independant book chapters and then answer the approximately 200+ mails I expect to accumulate while Im AFK... So don't expect much posting here before after June 7th.

Meanwhile, the ludologist is formally rejoining DIAC and the game center, as of June 1th. Welcome back, Jesper!

Viral Marketing Blogging?
Looking at the referral patterns in my stats and discovered that a few people had come from: growabrain - a daily theme-oriented blog, with lots of crazy links, written by Hanan Levin, real estate man of California and part of a real estate compagny. I'm linking to his/their blog, so I guess whether intentional or not their "viral marketing through blog attention" strategy works - even if I'm never going to buy a house in California, I'm spreading the meme ;).

[I got in there because they had a 'theme' on the Danish wedding and other "unusual" Danish links]

And also, via the website, a link to a little article about real estate blogs.

We have a winner: Computer Games Conference with ugliest website
CGAIDE is an "International Conference on Computer Games: Artificial intelligence, Design and Education" in cooperation with Microsoft. Potentially interesting conference, but the design orientation sure doesn't show on the conference website.

Band sites are experience sites
Many band sites are quite experimental and good examples of more creative uses of the webmedia: for instance, take a look at Danish Marvellous' website. In the genre, I believe Gorillaz.com is a classic.

Do you understand jysk?
A small Danish test to see if you actually can make sense of the local Danish dialect "jysk" (spoken with a lot of regional varieties in Jutland):
Ka' du jysk?

NILE 2004
Wauw - there is a third Narrative & Interactive Learning Environments scheduled this year: NILE 2004 Conference, 10th-13th August 2004, Edinburgh, Scotland.

I particpated in the first one back in 2001. Though somewhat at a remove from my core research interests, it contained some of the more fascinating presentations and ideas I have come across in my conference years.

What brand are you?
I asked this nifty little "mock-brand" generator some time ago what would be a good name for this blog. It suggested substructio - still considering that!

Game approaches: at the Danish Game Researchers Network site, you can find some interesting Danish and English articles on game study approaches.

TEMPHEAD
It has now been officially announced at ITU, so I guess it is acceptable to post it here as well: I have accepted to step in as TEMPORARY head of my department (Digital Aesthetics & Communication) as of June 1st. The announcement of the position as permanent new head is underway and applications for it will probably have a deadline in September. This means that I will likely be serving as temphead until the end of this year (ie the entire fall term).

Note that I have accepted the position with a specific condition: that my assistant professor contract is extended with hopefully the number of months I serve as temphead. Plus I have secured some form of promise that I will get the possibility to travel abroad as visiting researcher, away from ITU, in late 2005.

Effectively, I will be "managing" 15 researchers, one academic secretary and a student help. Many of the researchers are close colleagues and also friends, so in practice I want it more to be about collaboration than management. However, I get some extra money for making both popular and unpopular decisions, making help sure that we produce the exams we need to produce and that we don't go over budget. I'm the guarantee that DIAC does not come to a stand still while we are waiting for our new head, but that business continues as usual. So that I'll do - continue "business". And, as an added bonus, I also have the chance to perhaps also get some initiatives going that I having been thinking about for some time now...

As for the life of the blog in the months to come, it might change somewhat. I know many of my colleagues read this blog - and since I'm now also their head this is perhaps no longer the place to went the occasional frustrations regarding my job pr private life;). I think one of the more difficult parts of becoming a head, temporary or not, is learning what to say to whom and what not to say. But I'll figure out as I go along I guess.

And then back to business...inquiries are already starting to fill the mailbox!

Levelling up?
Interesting things are happening in my department at the moment. It might mean that I for various reasons (such as lack of time) might be posting (even) less here. More to follow.

The most photographed Danish event ever...
And I'm guilty as charged! A little photo series from the royal wedding day over at my photoblog.

Taped! Life without bending...
My physioterapist is a radical pedagogue. Today he taped me. I've been seeing him (and before that another physioterapist) for more than 2 months now - both have diagnosed me with a "slipped" or "displaced" disc....read more.

Event gaming: The Wedding games!/Bryllupsspil!
There are advergames and political games, but have anyone anywhere else discussed event games? I think the current mini-wave of Danish wedding games, celebrating the marriage of this guy to this woman must go under this heading!
The two webgame examples I so far know of :
The Grand Wedding Game (by Kristian Juul Andersen - smack the studs or models trying to get into the carriage). Via Martin.
Saving Princess Mary (on the Danish TV2 site). Via Politiken.

Netsummary!
Lots of good stuff netSummary (aesthetics, fun games, the weird netstuff you circulate in emails to your friends etc). My cool design colleague and ITU ph.d. student Martin is a writer there.

Talk to me!
It seems like Blogger has realised that it was falling way behind a lot of other blogging services. So it has just relaunched its website, including the possibility to add a comment function and a site feed. And thus saving me a lot of time - as I have for a long time considered how to get comments without going through the hassle of changing blog provider. With a little bit of tinkering with the code, it even seems to work. I think you can do a bit more fancy stuff with it, but that will be another day.
*big grin*

Hitman as film star
Yet again I refer to an article in Politiken discussing games as films, particularly focusing on Hitman - the developers of which have been approached by several Hollywood producers who want to make a film based on the character (according to the article). It talks a bit about what makes a game character "filmable" in general, but most about Hitman and the branding of the main character in the games.

Games to films certainly seem to be taking off as trend. I have had several posts on the subject already. See these posts: April 03, March 03, September 2002, February 2002 + the earliest going back toJuly 01.

Adaptation: a summary
A nice little teacher's site from Canada, summarising some of the important points when discussing the process of GER 321: Adapting Literature to Film.

Busy days...
This week not much time for surfing and blogging. It is the start of the 4-week project period here at ITU, and I am supervising & helping the start up of six student projects (12 students). Add to that several term-projects and the three masters theses, I'm supervising, many of which are due at the end of this month. And I'm negotiating with two new master thesis groups. Several days this week and next are simply packed with supervision.

On top of that finishing a paper I'm writing with Tosca, finalising the reception for the book, looking for external graders, discussing matters with management and trying to get a websurvey up and running. Time is running through my fingers like sand.

Oh, and tomorrow is the first day of the game design symposium & workshop, so I will be afk attending that.

Ring tone music band
An interesting feature in Danish newspaper Politiken today - a German "band" Super Smart has published a new CD - consisting of melodies (ring tones) for the mobile only. You can download them from their website.

What you need to know before you tie the virtual knot...
Via a non-blogging colleague: The Star Wars Galaxies Wedding Guide...And of course, if you can't be bothered to go through all the hassle yourself, you just a hire an in-game wedding planner - apparently these days, this job is turning out to be a popular profession in SWG!
